Crab Cocktail
JEFF KAN LEE / The Press Democrat
The Crab Cocktail at Cafe Europe ($8.50 ***½) was glorious.

The Germans do Christmas right. Over there, it's not primarily about shopping and presents, but rather about home and hearth, children's choirs singing, the appealing sound of cathedral bells ringing, good food, family and friends, and the quietude of snowy winter nights.

Berlin may be 5,665 miles from Santa Rosa, but something of that atmosphere can be felt during this holiday season at Café Europe in the St. Francis Shopping Center. Chef Robert Buchschachermair, who is Austrian, and host Herbert Zacher, who's originally from Bavaria, have decorated their popular restaurant in true German fashion. As you enter, you're greeted by a statue of Weinachtsmann, the German version of Santa Claus. Nutcrackers in the form of toy soldiers are placed on every table, and there's a tall one at the back of the room. Small merry-go-rounds fill niches here and there.
